Incoming Remarks from President Michael Gasper

Hope you are all having a wonderful summer! I am currently representing SNA-WI for the first time as President at the 2018 SNA Annual National Conference in Las Vegas, NV! Our Conference theme could not have aligned better with National SNA to "keep it rolling" with School Nutrition.

Just two weeks ago we hosted our 61st Annual State Conference at the Kalahari with over 300 members in attendance!  There were lots of exciting educational breakout sessions and we were fortunate to have NFL Hall of Fame Running Back Franco Harris and Aaron Hunnel as our great Keynote speakers!  Our industry members and vendors shared with us many new products and ideas to boost our school meals - thank you to all who attended and for their support! A special thanks to Barb Waara and the Steering Committee for all of their hard work that went into planning this great event.

We also held our 2018-19 Elections for officers. In our election, we had over 145 voters - I am proud of this participation. The election results are as follows:

  • Vice President - Kerri Feyen
  • Secretary/Treasurer - Nicole Weeks
  • Members and Marketing Chair - Joyce Gaulke
  • Legislative Chair - Caitlin Harrison

Congratulations to these incoming board members! In addition to our elections, our current board members were reinstalled:

  • President - Michael Gasper
  • President-Elect - Jesse Bender
  • Immediate Past President - Diane Agrell
  • Chapter President Representative - Sarah Mumm
  • Education Chair - Lyn Halvorson
  • Industry Representative - Andrea Hougaard
  • DPI Representative - Jessica Sharukus

In addition, all Chapter Presidents were installed for the 18-19 School Year. I look forward to working with our Executive Board, our Chapter Presidents, and our members to make the 2018-19 school year one to remember for SNA-WI!

Some of the initiatives we will be working on in the coming year are:

  • Working to get more members involved.  We have heard that running for office is too long of a commitment so we changed our by bylaws to eliminate the Vice President position and shorten the time commitment down to three years from four.
  • Dividing our Members and Marketing committee into two separate committees.  The Marketing Committee will work on a marketing plan that will include a greater presence on social media and in other media outlets.
  • The Members Committee will be working on an aggressive New Membership campaign that will attract new members and past members who have not renewed their membership within the organization.  In addition to that, we will use the example set by state legislators and assess redrawing chapter lines to connect inactive Chapter members with active Chapters.
  • Forming an Ad Hoc committee made up of young professionals that will be known as the "Next Gen" Committee to find out what our next generation of members needs from our association.
  • Adding content to our Tray Talk Electronic Magazine that will feature member stories and all of the great things that are happening in our programs across the state every day.  In addition we will be applying for CEU’s for reading the articles much like the NATIONAL School Nutrition magazine.
  • Adding recognition of members achievements both at an association level as well as letters to superintendents so those achievements will be recognized at a district level as well.

The most important thing that all of us can do is to make the commitment to get involved in the Association.  It can be a simple as helping to plan a chapter meeting, volunteering at one of the conferences, participate on a committee, or running for office.  We need member involvement to make the Association a strong and viable force in the child nutrition industry.  Don’t wait for the perfect time or for someone else to do it because you do not have time. The perfect time will never come.

I challenge each of you to give a little of yourself to our association.  I promise that what you receive in return for your efforts will far outweigh what you put in.

I look forward to a great year in School Nutrition and SNA-WI as your 18-19 President.
