2014-15 Annual Conference

Theme: School Nutrtion Jump Around! Celebrating Everything Wisconsin!

We started over a year ago with an idea to celebrate all we have accomplished over the last few years in child nutrition.  We do not serve trans fats, and have reduced saturated fats, total fat, calories, and sodium.  We have increased the consumption of fruits, vegetables, and whole grains.  We are providing smarter choices in the cafeteria and entire school environment.  Yes, we are successful in creating change.

The theme School Nutrition Jump Around, “Celebrating Everything Wisconsin!” was exactly what happened at the end of June / beginning of July in Green Bay.  We had our first bound program for the conference because of the size and number of ads purchased.  Wisconsin Milk Marketing Board provided us with a precon Dairy Farm Tour / Cheese Factory Tour and lunch.  The House of Delegates meeting went off without a hitch thanks to Jennifer Jennings and Barb Waara.  Parliamentarian for HOB was SNA Midwest Regional Director Michelene Piekarski.
Monday started with a tour of Lambeau Field, truly a memorable part of growing up in Wisconsin.  We then came together for opening remarks and our first “Jump Around”.  What a sight, seeing 300+ jumping to a Camp Randall tradition, definitely Wisconsin.  Voting booths were opened, awards presented and our Keynote speaker took the stage, Dr. Katie Wilson, SNS.  Katie addressed the conference in her new position as Deputy Under Secretary of Food, Nutrition, and Consumer Services with the USDA.  Katie has long been associated with everything good about Wisconsin!  Then the breakouts began with 1st Timers, WMMB, DPI trainings / question and answer sessions, Chef’s, resources, hiring, and growing gardens.  The day ended with a traditional Wisconsin tour to Hinterland Brewery.

Bright and early Tuesday started with Zumba at 7 AM followed by more voting and opening remarks.  Day 2 was a real treat with Chef Jason Morse, CEC as our keynote speaker.  Chef Jason is dynamic, entertaining, and provided a lot of eye-opening ideas, even though he forgot his pants! Julie Cox presented DPI updates after lunch and round two of breakouts began with director roundtables, balancing acts, equipment tips, a Chop Chop update, state resources, procurement training, legislative updates, social media, food safety, BIC, Chef Jason breakouts, certification and credentialing with SNA, cranberries, and dealing with staff conflicts.  The Steering Committee felt great about the number and variety of breakouts offered this year.  The evening was a huge hit!  Tailgating with brats, burgers, and beers at Ashwaubenon Lanes, with well over 400 members of SNA and industry was a Wisconsin celebration.  Bowling (all lanes), raffles, and fun filled the night.

Wednesday brought us all back together one last time for opening remarks and installation of the 2015-2016 leaders of SNA-WI.  Barb Waara was installed as the new president of SNA-WI!  After installation we watched products on parade and made our way to the largest vendor show SNA-WI has had to date.  The show provided us with a chance to see what is new and what is working for all us planning our menus.  Day 3’s keynote came from Coach Bobbie Kelsey of the Wisconsin Badger Women’s Basketball Team.  We did represent ourselves well with the closing conference Jump Around for Coach Kelsey.

Time has flown by and my time is up.  I want to thank the Steering Committee for all their help and a big thank you to the speakers and volunteers who helped make this conference a success.  The new executive board and chapter presidents will help lead SNA-WI in the coming years and please stay active and support your SNA!   The time and effort spent is paid back in experience and relationships that last a lifetime.  Mark your calendars now for the 2016 SNA-WI annual conference being held at Kalahari Resort June 26-29.
