Spring 2011-2012
by Pamela Harris, Chapter President
Our third general membership meeting was hosted by soon-to-be-retired Jean Badura and her staff at South Milwaukee High School on March 28.  Jean has been actively involved in Chapter 16 for many years and we appreciate her willingness to host a meeting whenever we ask!  We also appreciate the generous sponsorship of Fox River Foods and their Education Sales Specialist Val Oschenschlager for providing dinner for the second time this school year.  Thank you to Teri Ernest and Stefanie Newell of Key Impact Sales and to Cheryl Pratt from Progressive Food Marketers for contributing to the dinner as well.

“Spring Into School Nutrition” was the theme for the night.  Our fundraising committee, led by Debbie Noyes, SNS of Swallow School District, raised hundreds of dollars to use for scholarship awards.  Michael Gasper, Nutrition Services Supervisor from Holmen School District, gave a high-tech presentation on marketing for school food service programs.  He gave us countless ideas for program promotion, from “Chef of the Month” and community picnics to visits from local University football teams.

Now we are looking forward to our traditional May Social meeting – which will be anything but traditional this year!  Co-Vice Presidents Cindy Fassbender of Slinger School District and Vicki Kain from Elmbrook Schools have planned a truly sensational event, being hosted by the Boelter Companies on May 2.  It will be an evening of elegance that will include wine tasting, table-setting demos, gourmet cheeses from the Wisconsin Milk Marketing Board, appetizers, jazz music and much more!  It’s always nice to spend an evening relaxing and having fun with fellow Chapter 16 members.  I hope to see you there!

Our second general meeting was held on November 30 at North Middle School in Menomonee Falls. Deb Brunner, RD, and Barba- ra Rodriguez, RD, from Milwaukee Public Schools, provided an en- tertaining educational session entitled, “R U Smarter Than a School Food Service Professional?” I would like to express our gratitude to Pete Uselding and Midwest Venture Partners for sponsoring the festive Asian dinner.

For the past few years, Chapter 16 has been awarding cash prizes for membership. At most meetings, we award two $50 prizes to new members, one $25 prize to the sponsor of a new member, and one $25 prize to an existing member. Winners must be present at the meeting. It definitely “pays” to encourage your co-workers to attend a Chapter meeting and become a new member.

We are looking forward to our third meeting sometime in March – and a new idea for our May Social. Co-Vice President Cindy Fassbender has been working on a unique and fun plan for our final meeting in May – don’t miss it!

Fall 2011-2012

For the past 16 years, I have watched Chapter 16 grow and thrive as a direct result of the enthusiastic involvement of our terrific members. We are pleased to have returning Board members Janice Koski and Pam Meyer, Co-Presidents Elect from Kettle Moraine School District; Cindy Fassbender from Slinger Schools and Vicki Kain of Elmbrook School District as Co-Vice Presidents; Cindy Jensen, New Berlin Schools, as Certification Chair; Cheryl Peil of Elmbrook School District as Nutrition Chair; Debbie Noyes from Swallow School in multiple roles as Advisor, Nominations Chair and Fundraising Co-Chair; Laura Havlik, Germantown School District, as Publications Chair; and our Historian Tina Van Dusen from Menomonee Falls. We are fortunate that many of our members have participated on the Board over long periods of time in varying posi- tions. This kind of involvement has produced some great friends as well as valuable professional contacts. I have always felt privileged to be part of this dedicated group of awesome people.

This year we’re also excited to have many brand new Board members, including our Treasurer Deb Brunner and Secretary Jan Kosanke from Milwaukee Public Schools; Peggy Reinders of Elmbrook School District and Ellen Leasure of Elkhorn Schools as Member- ship Co-Chairs; and Rachel Hess of Muskego-Norway Schools and Deborah Lox as Fundraising Co-Chairs. We can look forward to an interesting and productive year with fresh ideas from so many new participants!

A special thank-you is extended to departing Board members Col- leen Vickio, Secretary; Monica Houtler, Advisor/Nominations/ Fundraising; Linda Binder, Fundraising; Jean Badura, Membership; and Sharon Boos, Legislation. Chapter 16 has benefited significantly from the contributions of these long-time Board members.

We ended the 2010-11 year with a Spring Fling at South Milwaukee High School on May 11th. Janice Koski and Pam Meyer did an excellent job planning this social evening. New officers were installed and members enjoyed a potluck dinner, Zumba class, stretching, and mini massages.

Our first membership meeting of the 2011-12 year was held on Wednesday, September 28th at Brookfield East High School and highlighted this year’s NSLW theme, “Let’s Grow Healthy.” The
1.5 hour continuing education session featured a presentation by Sara Tedeschi, who led a team at UW-Madison to develop and refine an online Farm to School toolkit for Wisconsin. I’m sure that our fundraising team will come up with many fun fall harvest ideas. Join us for some quality time with Chapter 16!

Chapter 16 had another great meeting on March 2. Set-up with a Mardi Gras theme, there were 82 members and over 50 guests at the NEW Badger Middle School in West Bend, WI. Attendees had Crab Cakes, Cajun Flatbread, Bourbon Chicken, Chicken Jambalaya, Creole Soup with Andouille Sausage, Sweet Potatoes, Green Beans and Ham, Corn Muffins, Red Beans and Rice, and Red Velvet Cake, Sweet Potato Pie, and Pecan Pie for dessert, sponsored by Barb Allen from Food Marketing Services, Inc. and Paula Mattson, RD, Great Lakes Marketing, Inc. This New Orleans style dinner was terrific!!!! After the business meeting our members and guest were greeted by our speakers for the night. Lynne Gross, RD, SNS, Food Service Director of West Bend School District, talked about kitchen construc- tion challenges and transitions of setting up the new Badger Middle School kitchen, and Ali Dorazio, MS, RD, Senior Nutrition Scientist Bell Institute of Health spoke about the importance of getting the whole story on whole grains. And then we moved onto giving out the raffles and door prizes (what everybody is waiting for). We had a great time! Thank you to all our sponsors, speakers, hosts, members, guests, etc. for a fun filled night.

Our next Board meeting was at the end of March at the Elmbrook Administration Offices. Our next Chapter meeting will be our May Social. The Social will be May 11, 2011, registration starting at 4:30 pm at South Milwaukee High School. The theme is “Relax, Refresh and Reenergize”. We will have a pot luck dinner with a healthy salad bar, healthy appetizers, and healthy desserts. Please join us, it will be a relaxxxxxing time for all.

I am very excited to announce that our December meeting was held at the Indian Community School in Franklin on Tuesday, December 7. This was a new hosting site for Chapter 16. We had two presentations from the Wisconsin Dairy Council and the National Pork Board. We had a cookie exchange, stockings full of gifts that attendees won, and we collected warm coats, mittens, gloves, hats, scarves, etc. for families in need. We also had drawings for new members, sponsors, and existing members. Wow what a night! We definitely got in the Spirit of the Holiday Season.

Again, we are always looking for new faces to serve on the Chapter 16 Board. Serving on the board or participating on a committee does NOT consume your life. So get more involved, let’s hear your ideas and experiences. Just ask any of our current board members and they can tell you how much fun we have planning and work- ing together. If you like to have parties we have a spot for YOU! No one is alone in this (GO TEAM).

Fall 2010-2011
by Debbie Noyes, SNS, Chapter President
Well here we are again, another summer gone and a new school year begins. By time you read this we will be back in full swing. Chapter 16 wishes all of you a productive and exciting school year.

I know you were expecting Pat Quinsey to welcome you back this year. Pat has taken a position in healthcare food service. We will miss Pat and thank her for her hard work and dedication to Chap- ter 16 and wish her the best of luck in her new position.

Pam Harris and I have moved-up to President-Elect and President and we welcome Janice (JP) Koski, Pam Meyer, and Laura Havlik who came forward at the Annual State Conference to fill the posi- tions of Co-Vice Presidents and Publications. At this time all our positions are filled, but as always we would like to extend a hand and invite anyone interested in becoming a Chapter leader to at- tend one of our board meetings and see what kind of commitment the positions have. You can call me at work (262) 367-2000 x110 to find out the date of our next meeting.

I would like to thank and congratulate Monica Houlter, RD for her leadership and continued work with our Chapter and her new posi- tion as Secretary/Treasurer for SNA-WI. She will do a super job. I must say I have big shoes to fill and I am grateful for her continued support and guidance, and also, for having such a knowledgeable and experienced Executive Board.

Chapter 16 had a very productive meeting at the Annual State Conference. We gathered many ideas for CEU’s for future meetings and had many schools offer to host. Thank you, thank you. We will be sending out information on meetings soon.

We would like to increase our membership and I know Chapter 16 Can Do It! Reasons to join: meet other food service workers, go to other schools and tour school kitchens, see new equipment, talk about and share new ideas (networking), try new food products from vendors, listen to speakers, receive CEU’s, additional training, professional growth, have fun, and win prizes, yes Prizes.

In closing, I would like to invite you to come and Check US Out! Everyone is welcome. Not sure what Chapter you’re in, or you’re not yet a member of a Chapter? Pick-up the phone, give us a call, we can help. I look forward to seeing you soon.

Upcoming Chapter Meetings

Chapter 16 is having our first meeting of the year at Germantown High School on October 11th. Registration is at 4:30 pm. Our speaker is from DPI addressing the new meal regulations.
